A Little Story from An Aisle nearby Jakarta's Old Town

Beautiful Murals along The old shophouses' Aisle at Jalan Pintu Besar Selatan

In one fine afternoon, the sun was shining brightly, and the noise of the horn honking from motor vehicles passing along the road accompanied my trip. I walked in the aisles of old shophouses from the Dutch era along Jalan Pintu Besar Selatan to the Old Town crossroad. I could see various life stories on it. There are some shophouses that still actively functioned for various commercial and office, but there are also some shophouses that already neglected and become a place used by the local street artists to support their economic activities.

As a pedestrian, I occasionally stop by to enjoy the painter's work who actually have been occupied the sidewalk since the 1980s. They offer various kinds of paintings, ranging from caricature, sketches of famous people, to realistic portrait paintings made specifically for the customer. In fact, they not only present there to make a living, but also collaborate with the DKI province government to beautify the Old Town area. Yes, the murals along the shophouses' aisle are part of the painters' contribution.

Walking towards the end of the shophouses' row, approaching the intersection of the old city, I was presented with a hustle-bustle of people who trade various goods. Starting from used electronics to various kinds of antiques. There is also a rice kiosk that busy serving a variety of foods, beverage kiosks that offer a variety of thirst-relieving drinks, till people who are just sitting there to take shelter from the rigors of life
